Because the forum is a bit dead at the moment, and because of my curiosity: How many people here watch anime on a regular basis?
In the end, this thread can be used for the following.
-Suggesting an anime you think is really great. Make sure you post why the show is great and the main genres of the show as well. -Asking for a suggestion. List the top few genres you like and what you are looking for overall. -Anything else anime related, from where to obtain certain shows to what you are currently watching.
Edit: If you are going to talk about manga, please make your own thread. This thread is for people who don't have any motional imagination. It is okay if referenced, but please do not go into large explanations. If someone asks for an anime, they are looking for an anime.

I would like a suggestion!
I try to watch at least one series over every summer. Last year it was FullMetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and Fruits Basket--but we won't count that because I re-watch that series all the time. :-]

Do you have any particular genre you're looking for, or just any old suggestion?

Hmmm... Let's see.
I hate slice-of-life with a fiery passion. If it is sc-fi is has to be really good for me to like it. Other than that, anything is good.

I believe both Kenlorens and Accomplice can vouch for me that The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is a really good Sci-fi, and personally I think it has the best conclusion I have ever seen in an anime. As a rule of anime, no show ends exactly the way you want it to. There's always at least one thing you wish was different. The Irresponsible Captain Tylor is an exception to said rule.
I'll also recommend Baccano!, Durarara!! (watch Baccano! first though, Durarara!! is a spiritual successor), and Fate/Stay Night. I can give a bunch more if you want, but those three are the ones whose soundtracks I've been listening to recently, and when you say Sci-fi anime, Tylor is the first thing to come to mind.

The first thing that comes to my mind is Neon Genesis Evangelion, but after looking through the list I have I can also suggest Toaru Majutsu no Index and Read or Die.
Neon Genesis Evangelion is not a show for the faint of heart. It is set in a parallel universe where an agency called NERV is producing machines called Evangelions, mechs that can only be piloted by specific humans, to combat the growing threat of the "Angels" that can end all life as we know it. It was made in 1995 (so just 2 or so years after Tylor, which I still have yet to see). The reason why it is not for the faint of heart is the amount of hell that the main characters go through, in both their personal lives and their missions against the Angels. There are also remakes being made with amazing graphics, but during the second movie the story branches off.
Read or Die is a four episode OVA that has the main character fighting other people with paper, using telekinesis of course. It involves the British Library, a government agency that has a large influence over the world (It also functions as a library). The story begins with a very important book landing in the hands of a criminal group that is out to do horrible things to the world (I would be more specific if I knew when they told you what). The British Library Special Operations Division is put to the task of retrieving the book and stopping the mastermind of the group before any harm comes to the governments of the world. The show is pretty light-hearted and has some pretty good action scenes.
Toaru Majutsu no Index is all about the situations that Touma is put through with his esper power called Imagine Breaker. It is set in the fictional Academy City, a city built for all of the students that are training their ESP. This brings them in direct conflict with the Religions of the world the use magic. It contains action as a main selling point, but another main thing I would recommend it for is its comedy. It does have elements of slice of life but they never are there for that long. Oh, and it has one of the best opening scenes (not the opening song) that I have seen. I mean, it opens with Touma dashing away from a bunch of thugs while yelling "Such Misfortune" (his standard line for these situations).
This is also just a small list, so if you do not see anything interesting out of what Apples and I have suggested, just ask for more.

I can indeed vouch for The Irresponsible Captain Tylor and its conclusion. Simply put, it is the best end to anything ever.
For not-scifi, I would suggest Fate/Stay Night. It's a really well done masquerade-style fantasy (it's the present day and magic exists, but the muggles don't know), where magicians summon mythical figures to kill their opposition.

Why Watch when you can Read? Summer is my Anime time. ;D I watch NARUTO and ONE PIECE but read almost everything else. As for suggestions, THE COLOR TRILOGY is good. GHOST HUNT is great if you like supernatural stuff. DEFENSE DEVIL is also a good supernatural one.

The Irresponsible Captain Taylor is pretty awesome anime, but I have never seen anything that has come close to how amazing the ending is. It is both awesome and leaves you feeling satisfied.
I'm kind of with Jacky on this one, I much prefer reading manga to watching anime. I am partial to slice of life, myself, actually, so I can't think of anything to recommend immediately. However, to all of you non-haters out there, I would highly recommend Bakuman. It's a manga about writing manga. RECURSION!

I've only had enough time to watch the first couple of episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion. But I really like it. Thanks again, gametwizter for giving me the first fourteen episodes. :-)
I like manga well enough, but with as busy as I am it is much easier to watch anime. Watching or listening to something gives a lot more room for multitasking.
I miss reading. :-(

It is a great series. The last two episodes ARE confusing, but there has been a side movie that retells those episodes from the points of view of other people, bringing more sense into the anime.

I'm going to read that next Kenlorens. Sounds awesome and I do need a good series to read this summer. Bakuman sounds sweet too! Finally my summer will be more interesting *insert an excited anime geek girl smile* Thanks.
